About the Fresno County Peace Officers Memorial Foundation

Peace Officers Memorial Day is an observance in the United States that pays tribute to local, state, and federal law enforcement officers and takes place on May 15th. The holiday was created on October 1, 1961, when Congress asked the president to designate May 15th as a day to honor law enforcement officers. John F. Kennedy signed the bill into law on October 1, 1962. Much of the holiday centers around the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C., which features the names of the more than 17,000 law enforcement officers who have been killed in the line of duty.

In 1997, planning began for the Fresno County Peace Officers Memorial Foundation (FCPOMF) to honor those City, County, State, and Federal Peace Officers who gave their lives in the performance of their duties. Larry Bertao, who was instrumental in the conception and construction of the FCPOMF, held the position as the first President of the FCPOMF from 1998 to 2003. James Olson became the FCPOMF President in 2003 and has held that honor to this day.

The Foundation was instrumental in the construction of the Fresno County Peace Officers Memorial, which broke ground on May 12, 1998, in the Fresno County Courthouse Park. On May 2007, an addition to the Memorial was completed and includes space for 40 additional names on each side.

As of February 2010, the tenth anniversary of the Fresno County Peace Officers Memorial, there are 56 peace officers honored at the Fresno County Peace Officers Memorial Wall, prominently displayed in the Fresno's County Courthouse Park.
